On July 5,2011 my husband and I said hello and goodbye to our beautiful son Marcus Alan Johnson Jr. In medieval times, alchemists sought the legendary substance known as the "philosopher's stone" said to be capable of turning lead into gold or silver. The alchemists also saw their work as a metaphor for the inner process of changing consciousness. Our grief has changed us. We are learning how to live again with a piece of our hearts missing.
In 1979 I lost my beautiful baby girl to SIDS. Not many were familiar with SIDS or Crib Death in the U.S. and even fewer in other countries. I heard my share of the "What Not To Say" comments, but the one that stopped me in my tracks and left me dumbfounded was "Why'd you kill your baby?". My only response was to give them all the information packets I'd been given. They later apologized and I understood that they had not known better but that question echoes still.

ReplyDeleteThat is awful! I'm sorry that you had to endure the loss of your baby and then on top of that deal with hurtful comments from ignorant people.
